How Much Guest WiFi Bandwidth Do You Need?

Most properties pick an internet plan by round number, then find out at 9pm on a Saturday whether they picked right. Guest WiFi bandwidth isn't really about the plan's top speed. It's about how many people are actually online at the same moment, and what they're doing.

Ask a hotel or PG owner how they chose their internet plan and the honest answer is usually “the ISP suggested it” or “it sounded like enough.” That’s how most properties end up sizing guest WiFi bandwidth, by round number rather than by anything the property actually does, and it works fine right up until a fully booked weekend puts thirty rooms online at once and the plan that “sounded like enough” clearly isn’t. Getting this right before you sign a contract is a lot cheaper than finding out after.

Bandwidth and coverage are two different problems

It’s easy to conflate “the WiFi doesn’t reach my top floor” with “the WiFi is slow,” but they’re solved by completely different things. How many access points a property needs is a coverage question: whether a signal physically reaches every room. Bandwidth is a completely separate question: even with a strong signal in every room, an internet plan that’s too small for how many guests are actually using it at once will feel slow everywhere, evenly. Adding access points fixes dead zones. It does nothing for a line that’s simply too small for the number of people sharing it.

Start from concurrent devices, not room count or headcount

The number that actually matters isn’t how many rooms you have or how many guests could theoretically be online, it’s how many are likely to be online at the same time, each carrying two or three devices, a phone, a laptop, sometimes a tablet. A 40-room property rarely has 40 rooms of guests streaming simultaneously, but a fully booked weekend can easily put 60-80 devices on the network in the same evening hour. Sizing a plan around the average day undercounts the exact moments guest WiFi bandwidth actually gets tested: check-in evenings, weekends, and anything close to full occupancy.

What actually eats guest WiFi bandwidth

Not all usage costs the same. Checking email and browsing barely register. A single HD video call typically needs somewhere around 1.5-3 Mbps, video streaming can run anywhere from 3 Mbps for standard definition up past 15-25 Mbps for 4K, and photo or video backups running quietly in the background add up across a full property faster than anyone expects, because they don’t stop when a guest isn’t actively using their phone. A property full of guests on video calls and streaming in the evening needs a meaningfully bigger plan than the same headcount just browsing, even though both counts as “everyone’s online.”

A rough number to plan around, not a guarantee

There’s no single correct Mbps-per-room figure, since usage varies by property type, but a workable starting point for planning is 3-5 Mbps per concurrently active device for a comfortable mixed-use experience (browsing plus the occasional video call), and closer to 8-10 Mbps per device if streaming is common. A property expecting 60 concurrent devices on a busy evening, then, is realistically planning for a plan in the 200-400 Mbps range, not the 50-100 Mbps range many properties still run on. A hotel and a cafe don’t share the same usage pattern either, so treat this as a starting estimate to adjust against your own property’s actual guest behavior, not a fixed rule.

Peak hours decide the real number, not the average

An average across a full day always looks comfortable, because a property isn’t full all day. What matters is the worst hour, typically evenings and weekends, when the most guests are connected and doing the heaviest things at once. If you already suspect your current line is being overloaded rather than under-sized from the start, that’s a different diagnosis: a pattern of genuinely hitting your plan’s limit repeatedly during those peak hours is the actual evidence an upgrade is justified, not a single slow evening or one guest’s complaint.

Before you upgrade, decide what you’re actually fixing

A bigger plan fixes a genuine shortage. It does nothing for one guest’s large download slowing down everyone else’s video call in the same hour, that’s a sharing problem, and a per-guest speed limit solves it far more cheaply than buying more bandwidth to spread around unevenly. The two fixes aren’t interchangeable: size your plan for genuine peak demand first, then use per-guest limits to keep any one device from taking more than its fair share once that demand shows up. And whatever number you land on, a backup connection that switches on automatically matters more than a few extra Mbps on the primary line, since a guest doesn’t experience “slightly slower,” they experience “no internet at all” the moment your one line drops.
