How Many Access Points Does Your Property Need?

One access point covering an entire floor sounds efficient right up until fifteen guests are all trying to use it at once from three different rooms away.

This is usually the first question, before any software question: how much hardware does a property even need. It’s also the question most owners guess at, because nobody hands out a clear rule, and most of the numbers floating around online are either too vague to use or too specific to trust for a building they’ve never seen.

A rough starting point, not a firm rule

A commonly cited planning figure is one access point per 25 to 50 connected devices, comfortably, before performance starts to degrade for everyone on it. Translate that into rooms or seats: a small guesthouse might genuinely run on two or three access points; a mid-size hotel with concrete floors between levels needs one per floor at minimum, sometimes one per wing; a busy co-working space with forty desks in one open room might need more density than the square footage alone suggests, because it’s forty devices all trying to do something bandwidth-heavy at the same time, not forty people spread out doing nothing.

Treat this as a starting estimate, not a spec. The honest caveat matters more than the number: two properties with an identical floor plan can need a different setup entirely depending on wall material. Concrete and brick block a signal far more than drywall; a building that looks straightforward on a floor plan can still have dead zones a paper estimate would never catch.

What actually changes the real answer

Building material is the biggest variable nobody accounts for in a rough estimate. A wooden-frame guesthouse and a poured-concrete hotel with the same number of rooms need noticeably different hardware layouts, even though a room count alone would suggest otherwise. Density matters too, not just headcount: a conference room with thirty people on video calls simultaneously is a different load than thirty guests spread across a building each doing occasional browsing, even though both are “thirty devices.”

Once it’s installed, the next question is different

Sizing hardware correctly is a one-time decision made before anything goes live. What happens after that is a different, ongoing question: is the hardware you installed actually staying healthy, or quietly degrading somewhere you can’t see. The practical takeaway

Don’t treat any single ratio, including the one above, as gospel for a specific building. Use it as a starting estimate, walk the actual space, and expect to add coverage in the spots a floor plan alone wouldn’t have predicted. Getting this roughly right before installation saves a lot more trouble than trying to patch coverage gaps after guests have already started complaining about them.
